HOLIKA DAHAN
HOLIKA DAHAN
Holika Dahan
What is the True Significance of Holika Dahan?
King Hiranyakashipu, a demon, had earned a boon through severe austerities. Due to this boon, he could not be killed by a human being nor an animal, neither indoor nor outdoor, during the day nor at night, by astra (i.e., projectile weapons) nor by shastra (i.e., handheld weapons), and neither on land, in the water nor in the air. He became very arrogant and demanded that everyone in his kingdom worship only him instead of any other personality.
Contrarily, Hiranyakashipu’s own son, Prahlad, remained deeply devoted to Lord Vishnu, which infuriated the demon king. He subjected Prahlad to cruel punishments, none of which affected the boy’s devotion to the Lord. Finally, Hiranyakashipu summoned his evil sister, Holika, to device a plot to kill Prahlad. Holika tricked Prahlad into sitting on her lap in a pyre. Holika also had the shaktis that was protected her from the fire. As the fire roared, the shakti or shield of protection encased Prahlad and Holika’s body perished in the fire.
This legend signifies the celebration of the symbolic victory of good over evil, of Prahlada over Hiranyakashipu and Holika. At the Holy bonfire, Hindus pray for the destruction of evil in their hearts to purify themselves and increase their devotion to the Lord just like Prahlad.
