Radha Krishna Temple wishes a very Happy Lohri/ Pongal/ Makar Sankranti/ Uttrayan!
VENUE - Radha Krishna Temple, Allen, TX (In Person)
We will celebrate Lohri, Pongal, Makar Sankranti and Uttarayan at the Radha Krishna Temple of Dallas (Allen). All four festivals are celebrated to mark the arrival of longer days after the winter solstice and the harvest season.
Lohri is traditionally celebrated in Punjab as the passage from the cold December weather to a warmer climate. It is observed the night before Makar Sankranti when devotees typically light a bonfire in their yard after the crop is harvested. They sing and dance around the bonfire to mark the end of winter.
Similarly, Pongal is celebrated in Tamil Nadu to mark Makar Sankranti. In this festival, devotees offer a traditional dish prepared from the newly harvested rice which is boiled in milk with jaggery until it overflows. This is why it is called Pongal.
Makar Sankranti is celebrated in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and many other states of India in many different ways but a common aspect in some states is Kite Flying.
The Radha Krishna Temple will be celebrating this event in-person at the Temple.
