2017 Sankranthi/Pongal celebration was yet another feather in the cap for Bal-Mukund, Frisco.  As the beautiful winter morning was getting warmed up by just enough sun rays, the ever chirpy Bal-Mukund students chanted the surya mantra in perfect unison, opening the celebrations enthusiastically!

At the Radha Krishna Temple’s Bal-Mukund, children are taught the meaning and significance of every tradition and shloka, big or small. This instills a deep sense of pride of belonging to Sanathana Dharma in young minds! A detailed PowerPoint presentation, explaining how the festival is celebrated in various parts of India, captured the attention of curious minds!  Students appreciated the amazing unity in the diverse regional variations of the Pongal/Sankranthi/Lohri celebrations in various parts of India.

The students learned that the rituals of the Sankranti festival are a great way to show our gratitude towards the Sun. “Did you know that the Vedas proclaimed that Sun is the center of the universe, much before Copernicus discovered this in 16^th Century?” remarked Nitin, a bright eleven-year old! At Bal-Mukund, students are always encouraged to share their learnings. It is a safe and nurturing environment where children are always enthusiastic to come up and share their thoughts in front of their friends.  Fun and interesting games were played through which students were encouraged to express their talents without any inhibitions! Crafts and Rangoli competitions brought out their creativity!

Yoga and meditations are two extremely important components of Bal-Mukund. Students performed the surya namaskar, befitting the Pongal celebrations!  The celebrations were completed with healthy and tasty snacks. “Laddus are my favorite part of festivals!” remarked Sujan, a chirpy 5-year old! At Bal-Mukund, children form wonderful friendships and strong bonds right from an early age, and this gives them a great support system as they grow through tough school years ahead of them!
