हरे राम हरे राम, राम राम हरे हरे || Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare
हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण, कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे | Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Hare Hare
This age-old 16-word Sanskrit maha mantra is from the Kali Santarana Upanishad of Krishna-Yajurveda.
The Yuga Dharma or the path to God-realization changes from Meditation in Satya Yuga, to Sacrifice in Treta Yuga, to Worship/Puja in Dwapar Yuga, to chanting the Holy names in Kali Yuga.
At the end of Dwapar Yuga, sage Narad is said to have asked Lord Brahma the means to cross Kaliyuga - the age of darkness, sickness, strife, discord, and ignorance. As the story goes, sage Narad was cursed by Daksha to roam the world without having a residence of his own anywhere, as a reaction to awakening the sense of renunciation in Daksha’s sons.
Brahma tells sage Narad that merely by taking the name of Lord Narayana one can cross the evil earthly existence of Kali and gives him the 16-word maha mantra: Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Hare Hare with the injunction to chant the 16 names of God in this mantra to quell the ill effects of Kaliyuga. The three powerful words of the mantra Hare, Rama, and Krishna denote the Energy, pleasure, and mesmerizing and captivating beauty of the Lord respectively.

Among the multitude of benefits of maha mantra Jaap and kirtan are:
Rhythmic singing and chanting of the maha mantra help us connect to this ultimate infinite source of energy, happiness, and divine bliss. Enhanced divine and spiritual energy calms the mind, helps us to get rid of negative and unproductive thoughts which in turn leaves the mind calm, peaceful, content, and in control.
Especially in today’s world of instant gratification and quick-fix solutions, the virtue of self-control is becoming a rarity. Lack of self-control slowly pervades all areas of our lives with the potential to adversely impact our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Chanting the mantra restores the positive energy needed to succeed in all aspects of our lives.Mindful chanting of the maha mantra in this age of Kali steeped in uncertainties, purifies the mind by dispelling negative and unproductive thoughts, fear, and anxiety. This, in turn, paves the way for optimal mental health that is centered around joy, peace, and happiness as well as physical wellbeing.
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu called for the chanting of the maha mantra to effect the cleansing of the heart. He aimed to enhance the understanding of the importance of chanting the Lord’s name. Several references have been made to this mantra in the Vedic scriptures. Some examples include:
God is present everywhere in the world and within us. But we cannot see Him due to our ignorance and due to this we don't benefit from Him. However out of his causeless mercy He has seated Himself within His names. Thus when we chant the name of God, we are directly in the presence of God! Let that sink in! The more we develop firm faith in this, the more we will experience the bliss of taking the divine name. One of the central tenets in Bhakti Yog is to constantly feel the presence of God. In doing so, one day we will realize Him. The 24 hour Maha Mantra Kirtan Mahayagya is a golden opportunity for everyone to solidify the practice of the presence of God in their lives. Singing the maha mantra kirtan with sincerity, faith, devotion and total mental involvement is the simplest way to elevate ourselves in our spiritual journey.
